Message from the Head of the Department, Civil & Environmental Engineering

I am very pleased to welcome you to the website of the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati (IITT), an up-and-coming autonomous institution established in 2015 under the Ministry of Education, Government of India. As one of the nine Departments of IITT, we have been making efforts to advance the educational experiences for our students with an emphasis on research-based learning to train them with cutting-edge technologies and skills mainly to enable them to grow as global leaders in science, engineering, and technology. The vision of CEE is to achieve excellence in pedagogy and research relevant to the natural environment as well as sustainable and resilient infrastructure, with a focus on quality-of-life initiatives of national and international importance. That being said, the visions will be accomplished by nurturing our engineers and scientists of the future through: (a) quality education and training; (b) state-of-the-art research; (c) offering technical expertise to academia, industry, and society; and (d) various outreach activities. In pursuit of the vision, CEE aims to create manpower with high-quality technical knowhow and competence. Further, the CEE envisions to synergize research activities in the areas of sustainable and smart infrastructure, climate studies, remote sensing, environment, and health. In a nutshell, the following are the thrust areas of CEE at IITT:

  • Smart infrastructure: buildings, transportation, water, and environment
  • Sustainable materials: innovative and green technologies
  • Performance-based design: reliability and rational methods
  • Multi-hazard assessment: risk, vulnerability, and resilience
  • Natural resource management: Land-Water-Food-Energy-Climate nexus
  • Emerging treatment technologies: air, water, wastewater, and solids
  • Environment, Health, and Sustainability

CEE currently focuses on core areas of Civil Engineering, which includes structural, geotechnical, hydraulics and water resources, transportation & infrastructure, and environmental engineering. The undergraduate and postgraduate curricula offer flexible options to students to choose specialty electives across the Institute. As part of capacity-building measures, CEE has been training and educating engineers and practitioners focused on current industrial needs through short-term courses, workshops, webinars, and symposia. CEE envisages to develop and offer new curricula that align with the emerging areas such as sustainability, big-data, machine learning, life cycle analysis, econometrics as well as innovation and entrepreneurship to solve challenges of the 21st Century. Furthermore, the futuristic curricula will enable avenues for students to develop micro-specializations and obtain dual/minor degrees.

CEE laboratories at IITT are being created as one of the best and most advanced research and teaching facilities in India, and currently occupies about 5000 square feet of space. Further, additional laboratory facilities covering an area of over 40000 square feet are also being created on-campus IITT through the Institute funds and Ministry-sponsored research grants. The laboratories also provide exposure to students in activity-based learning and hands-on problem-solving. CEE is currently involved in various sponsored research projects funded by national and international agencies in excess of over Rupees 18 Crore. The faculty members are engaged in several national and international collaborative projects with centers of excellence, universities, and research institutes.

CEE has committed itself to developing a diverse faculty, staff, and student community that is committed to furthering the environmental stewardship through various sustainability initiatives across pedagogy and research. In 2017, we started Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science Research programs, and in 2019, we launched Master of Technology degree programs in CEE covering three specializations: Structural Engineering, Environmental and Water Resources Engineering, and Transportation & Infrastructure Engineering, while starting the Geotechnical Engineering stream in 2020. The Department is now home to over 230 students, about 100 of whom are postgraduate students, pursuing various advanced degree programs in CEE.

Please take a moment to browse through our website and learn more about our activities as well as the accomplishments of our students and faculty. Let me welcome you to engage with us in our quest to augment the socioeconomic and socioenvironmental conditions at local, national, and global levels. With the support of our student community and the exceptional faculty, staff, and leadership, I am confident that much can be achieved in the future.

Please get in touch with us through email and also do visit our vibrant campus at your leisure!
